  1. Do you have a buddy?

Goats in general make great pets. They are smart, easily trained and are very loving. If you want a small goat, I would suggest Nigerian Dwarf goats over Pygmys. Nigerians are much more affectionate than pygmys. Pygmys can be somewhat aloof. Plus Nigerians are great milk goats.
  2. Satisfaction....

You can't always get what you want But if you try sometimes you just might find You get what you need - Keith Richards/Mick Jagger
  3. Getting old and adapting

Age catches up with all of us, and we have to adapt. This summer my wife and I sold our 102 acre farm and moved to a smaller property (9 acres) with a smaller house. We had given up our goat milk operation several years ago, after feed prices tripled and I had 3 back operations, and my wife...
  4. Haunting the farm

Liability is a huge concern. You should go over this with your insurance agent.
  5. Must-have equipment

Those are certainly important, depending on the type and size of the farm. I've never had an irrigation system, but I've had all of the others. Of course if you don't have a livestock farm, you don't need a manure spreader.
  6. Indispensable people

True. Where would we get our food without farmers.
  7. How much milk?

Thanks, Pinewood!!! I should have asked if the OP is looking for commercial dairy cows or for a dairy cow for home use.
  8. How much milk?

It depends on the breed and age. Holsteins, in their prime, are the biggest producers, they average 24 pounds of milk per day, in their prime. But they don't have the highest butterfat, which is important. Many dairies will pay you a premium for high butterfat.
  9. Do you have a buddy?

I used to have a diary goat farm, with 120 goats. Many of them were my buddies. Goats like to bond with humans. They make great pets.
  10. Profitable dairy farming

Oh no, it's not a misconception. Animal breeding and management is the correct place to start, but you also have to build a milk house that will be certified by your local state agency. That is VERY expensive. Before you start aquireing a herd, look into the costs of a milk house...
  11. Do you have a buddy?

Even when I had 120 goats and 40 sheep. All had names and my wife and I considered them all pets. But of course some bond with you more than others. I had one Alpine doe (goat) that would stay with me in the milk house after I milked her. I could milk 6 does at a time. Freeway was her name...
  12. Chili! Hot or not

I like it to be spicy, but not hot spicy. I can't taste anything if it's too hot, it just burns.
  13. Heaven

As is often said, the only way to make a small fortune in farming is to start off with a large fortune.
  14. The Coolest Coop Ever

I was thinking that, too. And how hard is it to gather the eggs and clean it out? Because we all know coops have to be cleaned often. I free range my chickens, but I realize that not everyone has enough property to do that.
  15. Tips for picking up machinery at auctions

Exactly!!!! You have to set a strict limit, and you have to be lucky. Some people start to get competitive and they HAVE to win the bid. That's how you end up spending more than something is worth.
  16. Tips for picking up machinery at auctions

Good point, very true. We used to live fairly close to an auction house that had auctions EVERY Friday and Saturday. And twice each year they'd have a huge outside auction. My wife and I use to wait all year for the outside auctions, we picked up lots of farming equipment at those. We got...
  17. The Coolest Coop Ever

I love the picture of the chickens walking up the ramp. They look like they're returning to the mother ship.
  18. Weekends

If you have a retail store, the weekends are your busiest time. My wife and I used to have an antiques shop. 90% of our business was on the weekends, and we didn't complain about that. If you're a dairy farmer, there are really no weekends. When I had a dairy goat farm, I had to milk my...
  19. Farming = Hope

Yup, I agree. Same thing here in upstate New York. Our creek went dry. I talked to the town historian, and it hasn't been dry in the history of our town, which is from the early 1700's, so it's dry for the first time in 300 years. There are more hurricanes in the southeast, than there have...
  20. The Coolest Coop Ever

Whoa!!!! My chickens would love that!!! They like to pretend that they're aliens.
