  1. Farming = Hope

Climate change is real, and we're paying the price for many years of people not caring about our planet. Not trying to be controversial, but it's the truth.
  2. Was Kennedy right...???

True, but begining dairy farmers learn it quickly. And they don't like it, either.
  3. Fall livestock chores

I spent today loading up my barn with a winter supply of hay. I'm not done, I'll be doing that next weekend, as well.
  4. Biggest mistake you made as a newbie?

Both goats and pigs are incredibly smart and both are escape artists. If you have some sort of mechanical latch on a gate, you can NEVER let goats see how it works, but they may figure it out anyway. I just usually chain the gates closed. They don't have thumbs, so they can't open a carbiner...
  5. Was Kennedy right...???

Definitely true. When I first got into dairy goats, I was shocked to learn that the farmer pays for shipping milk.
  6. Biggest mistake you made as a newbie?

When I first got serious about my egg business, I order 50 chicks thru the mail. They all arrived safely and they were growing nicely. I kept them in a confined area, but I free range my chickens. When the chicks were about half grown, I released them to roam on my farm. I watch them for a...
  7. Tips for picking up machinery at auctions

The trick is being at the right place at the right time. Know exactly what the item is worth, and know exactly the limit you are willing to bid on it. A bidding war starts when at least 2 people want the same item. A lot of scoring something is luck. The tractor I bought at an auction, I got...
  8. George Washington was right!!

    I agree with George Washington!!!!!
  9. The timing of sales?

Around here, upstate New York, we have auctions all year. I buy a lot of my equipment at auctions. I bought one of my tractors at an auctions, most of my tractor implements, livestock equipment, tools, etc. Obviously equipment goes cheaper when it's not the season when they're used. I bought...
  10. Fall livestock chores

My first chore is getting out the electric heated water buckets, cleaning them and setting them up.
  11. Trump Administration Invests $4.6 Million in High-Speed Broadband in Rural Mississippi

Good luck with getting grant money if you're a small farm. Most of the grant money is designed for corporate farms not for the family farms who actually need the grants. Contact your local cooperative extension. They'll have the most information on how to apply for grants.
  12. Beef or milk cows

I never had milk cows, but I had dairy goats, basically the same thing but much smaller. I milked 60 goats twice every day, 365 days/year. No vacations, no days off. You have to LOVE having a dairy farm or it'll drive you crazy. I did LOVE it. My wife loved it, except when she wanted to...
  13. Farmers and being late....

Farming was never my only job. I milked the goats and went off to my "full time: job. Then when I got home, I milked the goats again, plus did all my other farm chores. I never had the nerve to totally depend on just the income from my farm. My hat is off to anyone who is a farmer full time...
  14. Farmers and being late....

When I was milking 60 goats, I sometimes slept in and got up at 5:00 AM. Otherwise I got up at 4:30 AM.
  15. Jumbo Wrench Set Harbor Freight

Some of their hand tools are fine. I have one of their socket wrench sets that is as good as any.
  16. Farming = Hope

It's been so dry our creek went dry for the first time since our town was founded over 200 years ago.
  17. Jumbo Wrench Set Harbor Freight

I did. But I also bought a reconditioned Sawzall, so I'd have a reciprocating saw that I could rely on, because when you need one, you need it to work.
  18. Farming = Hope

That's for sure!!!!! We're always hoping!!!!
  19. Jumbo Wrench Set Harbor Freight

True. I bought a harbor freight reciprocating saw to put a metal roof on my house. I figured it would last for at least that job. As I was cutting the last piece of metal roofing, smoke started coming out of the saw. It lasted EXACTLY as long as I needed it for the job.
  20. Jumbo Wrench Set Harbor Freight

Some of their hand tools are pretty good, you have to really check them out, but I've had some pretty good luck with their hand tools. Their power tools often are not the best, but if they're for occasional use they may be OK.
