USDA Ready to Assist Farmers, Ranchers and Communities Affected by Winter Storms

My heart goes out to those who are struggling right now. I've heard that things are terrible in parts of Texas due to winter weather. No one needs to deal with storms on top of the pandemic woes. It's good to hear that help is on the way.

    Registering side-by-side

It depends on the state and how you plan to use it. Some states only require registration if you're going to use it on the road. You could run it all over your property without needing to register. I wish the law was more cohesive about registering UTVs and ATVs. It would be much simpler.

    Goats need a job

My goats were recruited for goat yoga which is popular in my Californian city. They loved working, but COVID-19 wrecked it. They are getting bored. What jobs can they do around a farm. I have chickens and goats for livestock. I grow flowers and plants commercially and I have a home garden...

    Rooster going nuts

You should be ashamed, @Henderson. I'm laughing like a hyena over poor Fred. You were just getting in his way. He might be too old for the stew pot anyway.

Quick games for playing on tablet

Which games do you guys enjoy playing on your tablets? I have an iPad and an Amazon Fire tablet, but I mostly use them for reading. I'm looking to add some quick games that I can play while I'm waiting for something else to start or finish. Any suggestions? I already know that I don't like...

    How-to make box cake yummier

I love this! I will try it next time. I attempted to follow a hack where I used orange soda in place of everything else and combined it with some vanilla cake mix. It was delicious, but it stuck to the cupcake wrappers terribly.

How does no-till farming work exactly?

I'm an organic grower and I use the no-till method for the most part. That doesn't necessarily make my job harder though. I'm a floriculturist and I run a plant nursery and I breed plants to create new varieties. A lot of my work takes place in the greenhouse or lab where there's obviously no...

    Easiest for waste management

Which farm raised animal is the easiest when it comes to waste management? It's got to be rabbits, right? That was my answer when asked. They're doing career day via webcam here. I was expecting to talk about plants, but the kids wanted to talk about animals and their manure. Go figure.

    Common farming myths

Not recently. Is this a thing? I wonder if COVID-19 set some people into a cleaning frenzy. Maybe they're bleaching their food or something wacky like that. One fella in my town tried to sanitize his money in the oven. He burned it up and set the kitchen on fire.

    Favorite sweet treat

I can't get enough vanilla ice cream, especially during the hot summer months. I'm also a fan of root beer floats. I'm not much for baking, but I love it when my neighbor sends over one of her pecan pies.

    Early tomato for commercial crop?

Fresh market. I appreciate your concern too. What we've learned in California is that the tomatoes are sweeter when given less water. There's a big market for those here. I already have two buyers who have asked me to grow tomatoes. That's what got me thinking about it.

    Asparagus

I recommend starting your crop with Jersey Knight crowns. Only the male plants produce asparagus spears and Jersey Knight is a predominately male hybrid. The variety is also pretty resistant to diseases.

    Early tomato for commercial crop?

I'm in SoCal. Which of the tomato plant varieties is an early producer as a commercial crop? Do you think it's possible to grow an acre of tomatoes without using any pesticides? I know there are organic growers out there, but I'm not sure about the degree of difficulty involved.

Use Sprite to make bouquets last

It's best to use a floral preservative, but if you don't have any on hand, then you can use Sprite as a substitute. The carbonation, sugar, and citric base will help your table flowers last longer. Just remember that a little Sprite goes a long way.

    Orchids dropping blooms

Phalaenopsis orchids usually drop their blooms when they're roots are left wet too long. I know you said you water them sparingly, but water could be puddling underneath the pot. If you've added a cache pot or the wholesaler included one, then make sure you empty it and dry it out good. There...

    Layer Up?

I'm in a part of California where it doesn't get that cold. I usually make do with a sweater and a coat on the chilliest days. I'm impressed at how the Northern and Midwesterner folks handle the frigid temps. I'm not that hardy.

    How are they raised?

If you'll tell us how you're raising them, I bet someone here can help you with the marketing terms. Some terms have legal definitions and using the wrong one could mean a hassle for you, while others are just fancy descriptors that can help you gain business.

    Golf cart battery

I have two golf carts that I use for my business and both have wonky batteries. I bought them used, so maybe that's why. Do you know where I can get a good deal on a new battery? Also, do you know how to tell whether the problem is the battery or whether something is just running it down?

    600 or 2000

I hope it passes. I know so many people who could really use the help. Churches and charitable organizations are tapped out at the moment. Any financial help is wonderful.

HVAC does it really save money. . .

Why not run an experiment for two months? During January, you agree to leave the thermostat alone. It gets set, then no one touches it. Then, during February it's a free-for-all. You can change the thermostat as much as you like. Anyone can. Then record the amounts at the end and see if...
