What to look for in an ATV/UTV?

Those characteristics do matter a lot, but you also need to pay attention to what type of terrain they're for and how much you'll have to pay to keep the thing running. I don't just mean gas, but regular maintenance also needs factored in. Things might've changed since I last bought an ATV...

Biggest mistake you made as a newbie?

I seriously underestimated just how smart pigs and goats are. I'd always been told that they were the dumbest livestock, but those people were dead wrong. They are crafty animals. It only took a couple of escapes before I changed my attitude. Goats also like attention and need toys to keep...

    Pig with Swine Dysentery

I'm sorry to hear that. It's very important that you quarantine that pig as soon as possible because it will spread quickly. There are three agents that can treat the pig: carbadox, lincomycin and tiamulin. Try to get your hands on some of that. Honestly though, it might be less expensive...

    Fall livestock chores

I'm going to move the chicken coop. They seemed to have more mites this time around, so I'm hoping that moving the coop and stirring the ground and cleaning out the litter while it's cold will kill the mites off. I need to do that too!

    Fall activities for kids

You guys have some great ideas! @Urban Homestead, if you don't mind my asking, how would I go about making it educational? I'd like to do that, but I'm not sure how. @Roo4, they are ages two to five, so quite young still. The five-year-old just missed the birthday deadline to start school...

    What are you preserving?

Same here. I used to plant a fall crop too, but I've gotten a bit too old to keep up with it. Now we just go all out during the warm seasons, so everything has already been canned and put away for the winter.

    Pickles too crisp

The blossom end makes cucumbers softer so try canning whole pickles and see if that helps. I agree with Digger about letting them sit longer as well.

How To Keep Raccoon Out Of Sweet Corn

I'm with the others, get a dog and teach it to run them off. You'll see an improvement in no time. Of course, the dog's upkeep will likely cost you more than the corn though.

    drill block monitors

I've never heard of them. Are you sure about the name? In the past when I've needed a part from an obscure brand, I've had luck with eBay and Craigslist.

    Fall activities for kids

I've been keeping my grandkids who aren't old enough for school. I do this to try and help my children out. Due to the pandemic, they don't have many choices for childcare anymore. I don't mind watching them and they're well-behaved, but I'm worried about what we'll do as the weather starts...

To buy or to rent a farm?

It depends on what you're hoping to do and the price of land in that area. Renting can be a great option, but expect there to be some rules, some of which you might not like. See if you'll be the only person using the land. I had a friend who rented. He was out plowing his field when he...

    Ants killing bulbs, tubers

You have to dig until you find the queen. Also consider moving your bulbs and tubers elsewhere if you can. Vinegar is supposed to be a deterrent, but that won't work underground. Maybe try adding some dichotomous earth around the roots. That might harm the worms too though.

    Teaching others to farm

The exciting bits are usually about planting and harvesting crops and raising baby livestock. Once this pandemic passes, maybe you could invite her down and show her the ropes. That sounds like a good bonding experience, as my wife would say.

    Your rooster have a favorite?

I'm just curious about whether anyone else has a rooster who favors a couple of hens or so when it comes to mating and hanging out. I have a rooster that is almost entirely monogamous from what I can tell. He watches over the whole flock and alerts them all to good foraging spots, but he only...

    Teaching children gentleness

I always told my kids and grandkids to "be easy" when they'd interact with animals. I'd remind them again and again to "be easy". They caught on pretty quickly. Kissing horses, chickens, rabbits, goats, and the like might not be advisable because of parasites. When my granddaughter was...

    The quality of water

Are you talking about your well water? Make sure you spray any herbicides and fertilizers far away from your well and don't spray uphill from the well since run-off will surely affect it. Heck, run-off from your neighbor's farm could be the problem. You need to get a good filter too. Good luck!

    Multipurpose crops

Which crops do you grow that serve several purposes? Mine is corn. I can eat it, I can make many things with the husks, I can feed the corn to my livestock, I can let my livestock graze on the stalks after the harvest, and it's a nitrogen fixer for the soil.

    Till Or No-Till

I agree with you Jack L. I think it's easier to till the soil because it disrupts the weeds. It also softens the dirt which makes it easier for young roots to grow. Most farmers add some combination of compost, fertilizer, and other soil amendments, so I don't see how it ruins soil fertility.

    Do those aerating shoes...

If you're talking about those shoes that have tiny spikes on the soles that are slightly longer than what you see on baseball shoes with cleats, then yes, I'm afraid they're just a gimmick.

    Perennial Vegetables

Sunchokes, watercress and kale fit the category of perennial plants. Lots of fruit bushes and nut trees give us food for years each season, but unfortunately, not many vegetables are perennial in the United States.
