I think the virus is so new that we don't really know what's what and that's why there's so much conflicting information out there. I'm not really doing anything differently than I did before when it comes to caring for my livestock. I've always favored good hygiene and keeping their areas...
We can opt for month-to-month rentals and that's what I'm going to do. Just play it by ear. Paying for the full season upfront comes with a discount, but I'd rather wait and see if there are enough customers milling about.
If you like tea with a citrus taste, then I recommend growing lemon verbena or lemon balm. Both are easy plants to maintain and they have a refreshing taste. Ginger is another good option and it helps settle the stomach, but I've had a hard time with those plants so I don't bother with them...
Where I live, we call it Queen Anne's Lace, but it really does look like a wild carrot when it's first emerging. Did you know it's also edible? Some people use the roots to make jelly. Sheep and horses will graze on it without a problem. They're biennial, so clipping them before they set...
Use a herbicide spray that only targets weeds and spray when it's not windy to avoid having it get on your grass. Like most weeds, I think foxtail is easier to kill when it's first emerging.
Tulips are toxic to cats, dogs, and horses, but the majority of the toxin is concentrated in the bulb. Amaryllis is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses too. I think many plants from the lily family are toxic for pets.
I am so thankful to hear that! I've been sharing some of the vegetables and fruits that I canned last harvest and I've been worrying about running out before I can get another garden going. This is such good news. Kids shouldn't have to go hungry!
Maybe I'm just being a cranky old man, but it feels like everything I buy lately is made to fail within a short time period. I'm finding equipment with plastic wheels, plastic screws, cheap aluminum washers, irreplaceable batteries, and the like. And it's not a matter of getting what you pay...
If I remember correctly, you're kind of a boutique meat guy. People pay more because your cattle are treated right. Do you think you have a strong enough market for boutique wool? Because that's essentially what you'll end up with to sell. American's don't generally eat a lot of mutton or...
I let them stay together and I've found it's less work that way. A newborn calf really needs that first shot of colostrum to give it the best chance at being healthy and thriving. The calf needing to suck gets it up and moving too. I tried separating them one year and I can't remember why...
Well, usually, the grower makes up for it by adding more vegetables from the bumper crop. So if you can't add a tomato because it's been a rough tomato season, you might add two or three peppers instead. There's generally a lot of good will between the grower and the buyers. It's smart of you...
My family has been affected by bans in a way I never thought possible. My elderly aunt is in a care home, she's recently had a stroke and is in decline. None of us can go check on her because the facility is on lockdown. When she calls she sounds so scared, but there's nothing we can do...
I'm getting up in years myself, so I understand where you're coming from. Do you have horses already? Since you can't ride, why not swap them out for draft horses and use them for plowing and carting? You could also get a golf cart or ATV for getting around the farm.
I'm retired now, but I was a pharmacist. I'd go mad if all I had was farming. It's lonely work at times and it's too much of a gamble for me to plan my finances around it.
I'm not sure what's causing your problem, but I'd hate to have to give up smoked meats entirely. Have you tried taking a probiotic to see if that helps? I've eaten some smoked meat that had a weird taste that I think was caused by the pellet, so you could be right. Switch it up and see.
Which big industry trends do you think are coming down the pipeline? Will technology and precision farming still rule the day or are we heading in another direction?
If the coronavirus does that much damage it will drastically affect our supply of livestock feed and pet food since much of it is still sourced from China. I try to steer clear from those products anyway, but I know many others who rely on them and it will harm their business if the supply ends.
That's tricky. Did you hear them fussing last night? Can you set up a motion activated camera? Whatever got into your coop last night is likely to strike again if it's a predator.
Yeah, I'd isolate it and make sure it's getting enough water. I'd probably also go ahead and remove the bedding and sterilize any equipment that was used with the pigs. I might sterilize the food and water containers if possible.
