    Farming and the holidays

I think it's okay to trade off with neighbors and take some holiday time off if you need to see family. Other than that, we like to celebrate the holidays with our animals. It probably sounds funny, but we always include some extra special treats along with their daily rations.

    Raccoons causing havoc

I have a camera set up and three raccoons are causing havoc with my goats. They are getting in at night and dumping the water. It gets the area wet and has soaked some goats too. I put the goats up at night and I leave them with plenty of water. Should I stop? I don't store food in the goat...

    Rusted cast iron pans

Thanks for your help, jjp8182! I've got things looking pretty good finally. The handle and a bit of the rim still has some rust though, and it's not coming off. Do you think it's safe to cook with anyway? The food wouldn't touch the rust, so I don't think it would be harmful.

    Sudden changes in temp

My chickens and ducks have wound up lethargic and just not seeming with it a time or two when there's been a sudden swing in temperature. I just make sure to keep a close eye on them and give them some extra high energy rations. They always go back to normal within a few days.

    Thanksgiving plans?

The coronavirus hasn't done much damage in my neck of the woods. We'll have our usual get together with the kids and grandkids. I look after the grandkids during the week anyway, so we already have contact and share germs.

    People you know with coronavirus?

Not a blessed soul and I suppose I'm grateful for that. I'm in a rural area. The nearest Walmart is over an hour away. There just aren't enough people around for it to do much damage here.

    any florida people here.

I'm in the Midwest so please excuse my ignorance about this bill you guys passed, but does it really apply across the board? Usually there's a slew of exemptions. Will it apply to farmers?

    Pumpkin problems

I'm not entirely sure, but I think your Rogues are those giant pumpkins, right? My guess is that your pumpkins started getting heavy and needed more support. A dog, cat, squirrel or rabbit could've been messing around with the fruit or vines and it detached. Heavy winds or rain could've caused...

    Free-range poultry?

Now wait a second, I would consider that free ranging, @Urban Homestead. Most farmers do have fences, often electric fences at that with no trespassing signs and cameras. It keeps people out! The spirit of free ranging the animals is all about treating them as nature and GOD intended. That's...

    Rusted cast iron pans

I have a shed with a little of this and a little of that in it, the point is you never know what you're gonna find. Well, today I unearthed two badly rusted cast iron pans. I guess they belonged to my late mother. Does anyone know how to fix them up? The rust is pretty bad, but it doesn't go...

    New versus used machinery

It depends on the brand, the materials used in manufacturing, the country it was made in, and the year. More often than not, I go for the old stuff because the market today is filled with machinery that was made with lots of plastic and designed to breakdown. No thanks!

    What are you watching?

I'm still waiting for the new season of The Mandalorian to come on. I feel like I've been waiting forever. It's been a long time since a show had me anticipating the next season, but this show is excellent.

    That horrible 4-letter word

I used to love snow when I was younger because it makes everything seem so clean and fresh. However, that's changed as I've aged. Now it's more of a hassle to deal with. You must live up north if you're already seeing snow this early. I'm sending you warm thoughts.

    Beef stew

I bet your stew will turn out great, @Roo4! I'm not as handy in the kitchen as my wife is, but beef stew is one thing I can handle that everyone likes. I add the traditional vegetables like carrots and potatoes, but I also add green peppers, onions, and mushrooms to make it a little different.

    Largest Distribution Challenge?

Hey there, @NHFARMERCBH. We used to have a member here who sold cattle at a premium, directly to the consumer. I can't remember the name (can you tell I'm getting old) but the member would let the customer come out to the ranch and pick out a cow. It seemed like a success from what I...

    Packaging seeds

Don't hand packaged seeds sell at a premium? I thought they did since the seeds are less likely to get damaged in the packaging process. I might be wrong but maybe you're selling yourself short.

    Cost of lumber

Put off your project if you can. Once the pandemic settles (assuming it does) prices will go down on everything. What Pinewood Acres says is true, but prices always rise and fall so there's no harm in waiting a bit if it's nothing you need done right now. I worry about firewood, but we have...

    Pumpkin seeds

You mean none of you guys have seed fights? Pumpkin seeds are slippery. You're supposed to get a few in your hand, and press an individual seed between your fingertips so it pops out at your siblings, spouses, children, really just whoever is near. Go for it @Charli1. You've already got the...

    Chili! Hot or not

The hotter the better I always say. I think it's because I'm getting older so my taste buds aren't what they used to be. I use lots of spices and peppers when making chili. It's the perfect fall meal. It sticks to the ribs.

    Fall activities for kids

Thanks for the explanation, @Urban Homestead. I can manage that and I bet their parents will appreciate it. I need to pick up some playdough after church today. I had forgotten about that stuff and it always kept my kids entertained when they were little.
