This is a great question. I've had Carhartt gloves for as long as I can remember. They are warm and they allow me to move my fingers. The ones I have aren't for playing in the snow though.
Does anyone ever put up snow fences in your fields or on your land? We do have them, I think it helps a lot. We have fields across from each other and when it snows, it blows like crazy. The snow fences really help with the whiteout conditions on our road.
We also leave ours in the ground. We cut everything off but about a foot. It does help keep the snow from blowing across the fields. My father always did this and we do too.
Gorgeous is right! I'm always fascinated by them. A few years back we had a momma and cubs about a mile from the farm. It was great. We went down when the DEC tagged them.
I just wouldn't trust that a solar powered generator would be adequate to power up a house or a barn. We use gas powered generators here at the house and in the main barn. We bought a few last year, only had to use them once.
Almost Eden - why would you want to encourage bees? I've seen a couple of people comment that now. Is it for flowers?
Yes, I would definitely plant clover. That's a great ground covering for pigs.
We had great luck with our soy beans last season. Towards the end of the season we had been invaded by pests! Just get them in early and keep a watch out for pests.
If I had to choose one I would go with scouts. I can teach my children about livestock and crops. I think they do so much more in scouts and learn more "everyday" things.
The golden rule is always return a container but never return it empty! Whether you bake something or fill it with candy, you should always return it full.
I would say the only time that you wouldn't do this or be expected to is if it was for a funeral.
We went out for a ride today on our side-by-side and we came close to a black bear. We don't see them often. I'll be honest and say that they fascinate me! Anyone have problems on their farms with bear?
I have not seen much about sheep farming here. I've never raised sheep and I don't know a lot about it. Anyone raise sheep? What is the purpose? I would imagine it would be for their wool?
You mean, buying to just resell them for a profit? Interesting thought but I have no idea. I don't think I would be any good at this either. Good luck and keep us posted if you try.
What is your favorite laundry soap? Farm clothes get so dirty and stinky. What did you find works in the tough stains and smells? What about a pretreatment?
Have you tried a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser? I swear that is my go-to for every stain or mess. I really have no idea how it works, but it does! It shouldn't even take the paint off.
I didn't mean any disrespect about saying just a guy thing. The ladies just never really got into it. My wife loves football though.
Desi- will your team ever play? I see a few Steelers are now on the Covid reserve list too.
I've been to a few of these. The auctions around here have farm equipment, ATVs, wood, plants, etc.. I have purchased tools, an ATV, wood and a few plants. I've never purchased farm equipment.
Last year we set up at our local farmer's market (to sell flowers and vegetables). We didn't have a great year because COVID-19 hit and people stayed away. I think we will do it again this summer. Who else does this? Do you sell a lot?
Does anyone buy their plants at an Amish greenhouse? We buy flowers there but never our vegetable plants. I'm thinking of doing that this next season. Their gardens always look fabulous!
That is an impressive story. Honestly we hear so many bad things about the future generation. It's nice to hear good things. I know my kids will do great things, because that is how we are raising them.
I'm thankful for many things but my favorite part of Thanksgiving day is football and food. No matter how busy or tired we were, we always watched football on Thanksgiving (gramps, dad, uncles and boy cousins). Memories, traditions!
