    Define Success

For me, success is making enough profit to support my family. Of course I don't just want to scrape by, but this year has been rough so far. I'm hoping we will all be able to pull through.

    Fire Extinguishers for the Farm

We have a fire extinguisher for our kitchen, but I honestly hadn't thought of the potential for fires elsewhere around here. I know it sounds silly, but it just hadn't crossed my mind. I'm going to add getting a few more extinguishers to my to-do list and get on that.

You and your employees at this critical time?

We don't have a lot of regular help here on the farm, but we do hire a couple of people to help us during the planting and harvesting season. We have not had any issues so far. We distance as much as we can. Our helpers have stayed healthy so far, and we are thankful for that.

    Keeping farm animals cool

We have a couple of livestock fans mounted in our barn. We let the cows out during the day, but if they wander back into the barn on their own, it's cooler in there than it would be without the fans. We also make sure to change their water out regularly and put down more water troughs for them.

    What Could You Survive On?

There are a lot of things you can grow in the garden to make healthy meals. Cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, squash, all kinds of beans, and spinach are just a few. You can easily grow herbs to season dishes with, too, like thyme, ginger, and rosemary.

    Mixing It Up

We are going to try planting some pumpkins this year. We won't plant too many, but we'd like to be able to take some to the Farmer's Market to sell this coming Fall.

    A bit of ranting

I think part of the problem is that the younger people haven't experienced life on the farm. Maybe they have stereotypes about what farm life is like. Being raised with all kinds of technology, I think the younger generation is really into that. What they don't seem to know is that there's a lot...

    Mother's Day

Like Easter, this Mother's Day will be rather unique.. It's hard on so many families not being able to see or be with their moms this Mother's Day. My wife, kids, and I have plans to plant some flowers for both her mom and mine in their yard on Mother's Day. We'll be ordering whatever they want...

    How Soon to Tag Calves?

It's required to tag baby calves by the time they are 20 days old. We tag our calves a week after they are born. After they're tagged, you only have seven days to register them, which can be somewhat stressful if you have a lot of calves.

Radish maturity times and how long can they be left in the ground

You shouldn't leave radishes in the ground very long after they mature. Doing so can actually harm them. Cut off the radish's greens, put them into ziploc bags, and store them in the crisper drawer in your refrigerator. They should keep for several weeks in there.

    Farm Animals for Business Meetings?

That's a cool idea. I wonder, though, if people who are not used to seeing farm animals would be too distracted by them to pay attention to the meeting/subject at hand.

    Curbside Pick-Up?

I know some of you are making product deliveries, but is anyone offering curbside pick-ups for your customers? I am thinking about offering this option for our customers and wondered how successful it might be.

    Keeping Piglets Warm

Could you possibly put the sow and piglets in a confined space and use heat lamps to keep them warm? They'll stay warm that way, and you won't need to worry about trying to warm a large barn.

Do You Check Hydraulic Fluid With Tractor Running

I check our tractor's hydraulic fluid when the tractor is off. You'll also want to make sure the cylinders are in the same position every time you check the fluid level. I retract mine each time. This will give you a more accurate picture of what's going on.

Local 4H wants to come to farm

Maybe just request that there are enough adults to watch the young kids when they come so you don't have to worry so much about it. I think it's cool that they want to come check out your farm.

    Tomato Cages

I'm thinking about building a tomato cage for our garden this year. I know there are different types you can build. The one I'm thinking of building connects two raised beds with a wire trellis. The trellis forms an arch, which I think would look really nice in the garden. Have you ever built a...

    Baking Soda to Kill Weeds

We've always used salt for our ice. I'll have to try the baking soda! I have had luck using baking soda to kill weeds in my small backyard garden. It definitely works, so give it a try this Spring.

    What age for buying calves?

If you're looking for some weaned calves, you might want to look for calves that are eight or nine months old. Calves are typically weaned when they are between seven and eight months old.

How Old Does A Bull Have To Be To Breed

Bulls reach sexual maturity before their first birthday, but the exact time varies by breed and weight. A bull is considered to be sexually mature when his ejaculate contains at least 50 million sperm with a 10% motility rate.

    TractorHouse

I've been thinking about purchasing another tractor for our farm, but as we all know, buying used is cheaper than buying new. I ran across an app called TractorHouse. I'm really liking it. It lets you search thousands of listings It lets you search for the make and model you want as well as for...
