    Certified Naturally Grown

I think it's a nice idea, but unfortunately, consumers have been trained to look for the word "organic" on the product label. CGN designation might require organic practices, but you can't legally use the word "organic" without the USDA certification. I'm not sure that it would help attract...

    Favorite Gardening Tool?

I don't necessarily have a favorite, but I do have one that makes life easier which is my huge garden bucket. It's on wheels and it holds a ton of stuff, so there are fewer trips to the shed and the bin. @vincenzosassone, it's nice that you help your grandparents when you can. I enjoyed...

Hottest flowers and plants this summer?

I'm not a seller, but everyone I know locally is after brightly colored flowers like lantanas and zinnias. After the long pandemic, I think most people just want to brighten up the world around them.

    So hot, flowers are screaming

I try to harvest as much rain as I can in order to water everything around here. It helps, but it's really getting too hot here. I wish the USDA would redraw its Plant Hardiness Zone Map. I hope you see rain soon, @Gordyg.

    Homesteading as a singleton?

I know that we've got a few homesteaders on here, and I hope you'll be really honest with me. How difficult would it be to start homesteading as a single person?

    Summer favorites

Pickles, pickles, and more pickles. I start fermenting my cucumbers as soon as they come in. The very basic recipe is to make the brine with salt, vinegar, and water. I like to spice it up with extra seasonings though. Sometimes I add garlic and lime, other times I add peppercorn, dill, and...

    Thunder drops temperature

I had to decipher your information a bit, but that's okay. It's a factoid that I didn't already know. How interesting that thunder drops the temperature. I had no idea.

    Hugelkultur gardening

I've heard about that type of gardening, but I've never tried it myself. It's supposed to be a great way to conserve water, feed the plants, and deter pests.

    Farming and the holidays

I wouldn't mind helping out a friend or neighbor so they could go visit their family over the holidays. I'd need them to show me the ropes first though since I don't have much experience with livestock. I'm sure I could keep them fed, safe, clean, and watered.

    Winter blues

I enjoy getting outside when the weather is decent. Unfortunately, those days seem to be over for a while. I sure miss my garden. How do you all fight the cold weather blues?

    Dehydrator or smoker

I have a dehydrator and it's pretty nifty, but I don't break it out that often. I use it to dehydrate fruits and vegetables more than I do for meat. It's great for making trail mix that's healthier than what you can find in the store. I've had mine for years.

    Thanksgiving plans?

I had hoped that the pandemic would be under control by now, but it looks like the coronavirus outbreak will be with us for Thanksgiving too. Have you decided how you'll navigate around that? I know my parents won't be flying to see us this year, so it will probably be a small celebration.

    Timber stand

I'd be on the lookout for raging fires. They just seem to last longer and longer each year. I'm not really sure what one can do to protect against that either.

    People you know with coronavirus?

I hope your neighbor and brother heal soon! My mom had it, but it was a mild case, and she got over it quickly. It seems to be spreading further and further right now. I've never been so thankful to have good health insurance.

    Energy costs

Investing in solar and wind energy is a great idea if you're running a medium to large operation and your climate allows for it. Some districts even allow the owner to sell their unused green energy to the power company.

My take on the election. . .

I think there's more than one mushroom species that qualifies as having psychedelic properties. I'm not interested in growing them though. I've been subjected to anti-drug PSAs my entire life, and they took. I'm not interested in the legalization or usage of drugs. I have nothing against...

    Raising different birds together

I volunteered at a rescue outfit before I moved, and we had all kinds of birds together. I think it works the best if there's a large mixture, the genders are divided, and the bully birds don't outnumber the gentle birds. I've seen everything together except swans. Some pheasant breeds are...

    Flea medicine not working

I have noticed that spot-on treatment doesn't work as well as it used to, but I don't live in a super warm climate, so I haven't had any problems lately. Even though I spring for the flea treatment that comes directly from the vet, it sure didn't work as well this past year. Maybe the fleas...

    Pumpkin problems

I tried growing my own pumpkins this year and it didn't work out, so I'm wondering where I went wrong. I grew two heirloom varieties - Rogues and Jack Be Littles. I didn't run into trouble until the fruit started growing. All of the fruit on my Jack Be Littles have busted and split before...

    Threats to food security

Constraints due to COVID-19 and the threat of economic collapse aren't helping. However, we are producing more than enough food and in the United States especially, we waste a ton of it (including me).
