  1. Preventing farm injuries

We've made sure that everyone knows the basics of first aid and we have several first aid kits spaced throughout the area. I hope they're never needed of course.
  2. Mentorship

If you spend enough time at the feed store, you're bound to run into someone who wants to talk shop. That's a good way to find a mentor in a rural area, at least in my experience. Finding the right mentor takes time because you have to build the relationship.
  3. Barn floor options

They each have their pros and cons. Concrete is the easiest to keep clean plus it retains less moisture than dirt, but the hard surface is tougher on the animals. Gravel rarely requires maintenance and it provides an easy surface to walk on, but it's tough to clean around. I prefer dirt...
  4. Storing apples

I have a surplus of apples and I'm too lazy to start pulling out my canning supplies again to preserve them. What's the best way to make them last? I usually wrap each apple individually with newspaper and store them in the basement, but is there a better method?
  5. Barn cat hurt

He isn't friendly enough to put in the cat carrier, or I'd take him to the vet. He must've gotten into a fight or something because he had a wound that burst around his outer ear. Now it's raw skin. The entire back of his ear is exposed, and it looks painful. Would it be safe to put some...
  6. Conditioning Rolls

I prefer steel on rubber, but each type has its pros and cons. I'm like you though. I didn't have a good experience with just rubber rollers. It took too long to get the hay dry. Maybe that was just a coincidence though.
  7. Renting land

I would probably try to reconfigure my fields, so I could grow everything I wanted on my own land. However, I've always been frugal and I'm a little bit of a control freak, so renting land just wouldn't work for me.
  8. Any good magazines?

Are there any good magazines out there that aren't filled with a ton of sponsored articles and advertisements? I used to love reading Good Housekeeping, but it has really become less about the content and more about selling products to the reader lately.
  9. Peeling a boiled egg

I've never heard of that one before, so I can't say whether it works. My go-to method is to plunge the eggs into cold water as soon as they finish boiling. The shells usually peel off easily after that.
  10. Quails with what animal?

Susannah, you probably already know this, but you can't turn those quails out to pasture if they've lived in a cage their whole lives. They'll be easy prey and even if they aren't picked off by a predator, they'll likely get sick. They'll stay healthier if they're kept off the ground. I know...
  11. Tacking on survival courses or camping

Have you guys thought of ways to expand your agriculture business into the educational and recreational industries? We have recently moved and I'm still getting my feet under me in this new market, but I could see myself finding success teaching foraging and camping skills. I don't think it...
  12. 600 or 2000

I thought that had already been determined based on income. Whether someone was affected or not by COVID-19 financially the reality is that someone with money can ride it out easier than someone without money. I thought they'd already determined those rules; am I wrong? From what I thought...
  13. Question about COVID-19 spread

@BIGRED, that had to be scary at the time you were going through it. I'm so glad that you're okay now! @Gardenry, I've had that same concern too. Some people who have already had it are a bit reckless. Well, maybe reckless is the wrong word really. Not sure what would fit though.
  14. Thinking of growing houseplants

How are you supposed to know whether a plant has been trademarked or patented? Good grief, it sure sounds like a hassle. Good luck, @Roo4. I hope your new venture is a big success.
  15. Anything you won't cultivate?

Mint is the only plant that I'll grow that spreads as much as it does and as easily as it does. All others are off limits. I also won't grow Walnut trees because they slow the growth of other plant life.
  16. Anyone knit?

I hate to say it, but it truly just boils down to practice, practice, practice. Here's a great tutorial on YouTube that's pretty comprehensive. It's a little long though. Here's a good one that's shorter and I also find them enjoyable to watch. Oh, and these are the same as German style...
  17. Family Friendly Netflix Movies

Have you ran across some great movies on Netflix that will appeal to the whole family? It's been so cold and rainy here that the kids are going stir-crazy. I'd like something that will appeal to tweens, teens, and adults - if that's even possible.
  18. The farm bill

Has the Farm Bill changed since 2018? I guess I need to read it again. I didn't think it made a huge difference at the time, but maybe I'm misremembering.
  19. Exhibition breeds

I think breeders can make a tidy profit if they're reputable and their stock is valuable in carrying desirable traits. They can also get various government grants if the animal is on the threatened or endangered list and they're willing to work with colleges or conservation groups.
  20. Increasing ventilation in the coop

I added some DampRid to the corners of the coop. It hasn't collected any water yet though. I guess it just takes time. I appreciate all the suggestions! This is such a friendly, helpful forum. I went to check them out and ran into the conundrum of choosing between an exhaust fan and a...
