    Parasite management

And where you live. People in cooler climates might get away with not giving their dogs a heartworm preventative, but in the South where mosquitos are out for 8 or 10 months out of the year, it seems foolish to risk it. I've never known a vet who didn't recommend it.

    Do you have a buddy?

My neighbor has some pigs that love to be talked to and petted. They make all kinds of racket to get his attention and happily trot alongside as he does chores. It's the funniest thing I've ever seen. Needless to say they don't need Charlotte the spider to keep them from becoming pork chops...

    Moldy straw

When I find some moldy straw bits I just throw that part out. I don't clear the whole thing out and dispose of it. My wife thinks that just throwing the visible parts away allows the unseen spores to spread. She's worried it will make the animals sick. But I think we'll always have mold...

    Rural business shipping

Your options might be limited since you're in a rural area. It would be making a deal with a devil so to speak, but I shipped through Amazon's Fulfillment Center when I lived in the boonies. You send your merchandise to Amazon and then you sell it on their platform and they mail it out. Of...

Tips for picking up machinery at auctions

I keep seeing folks on here say that they've scored farm machinery at great prices through auctions. What are some of your tips for scoring those deals? I live in Florida and I've been to a few auctions, but I can't say that I've fared well. I'm usually either quickly outbid or the...

    Fall livestock chores

Which livestock chores do you get underway once the weather begins cooling off? Are you fattening up your livestock? Preparing the barn for winter? Cleaning out the litter? Moving the coop?

    Turkey conclusion

You guys raised some good points and truthfully, I didn't do enough to grow their food and relied almost entirely on commercial rations. You've given me a lot to think about moving forward.

    When do fountains freeze?

You might be able to overwinter them as is. Just check the water temp in the fountain to see. I used to have a friend who raised koi and he said they went into a torpid state which allowed to survive the winter.

    Turkey conclusion

When I first got my flock I hoped to make a profit by selling the meat and eggs. I went with a heritage breed, so they could reproduce without the added expenditure of artificial insemination. I thought I had a steady source of cheap healthy meat for my family. I was dead wrong. That second...

    Pickles too crisp

I can only offer you anecdotal evidence, but the longer you leave them be, the mushier they'll get. So after you can them as usual, wait a month or three before opening the jar and eating them and I suspect you'll see a big difference.

    Not your favorite

Just about everyone hates dealing with manure, but other than that, what are some farm chores you've grown to dislike? I'm not a fan of mending fences. It just feels like it's never complete. Probably because it never is. There's always something extra you can do to it

    Mixing Orange And Green Coolant

Better not. I think mixing them causes the engine to overheat because the two together create a thickened gel which stops the coolant from flowing. Can you go back to the store and swap it out?

    Petting zoo?

I looked into it and in my area the permits and added insurance made it too costly of an investment. Definitely check on the regulations before getting too deep.

    Camel farming

I'm not sure whether they produce a bunch of milk or not. But think about this, what purpose will camels serve for you? How will they earn their keep? Are there many American's drinking up some camel's milk? I don't know of any, but maybe you could score a deal with a fancy restaurant.

    Moving sheep over wet ground

@spudnik Hey, thanks for setting me straight! I figured corduroy must be something man-made like a textured bridge and I never would've guess correctly. I understand what you're talking about. For some reason we always called them halves and wholes when I was growing up and it stuck with me...

    Planning my spring garden

I'm sure I'm not the only one who keeps a good-sized family plot with a variety of vegetables in addition to the crops that I grow for sale. I'm getting an early jump on plotting things out. The temperature has been unusually warm this year, so I'm tempted to plant my seeds earlier than usual...

    Fixing a cracked beak?

It took three of us to get it done and a whole lot of prayer, but I was able to apply some superglue to her beak without getting it in her eyes or on her feathers. She's still pretty cross with us, but her beak seems good as new. Thanks for the advice. @Andrew T, that was good advice too...

    Moving sheep over wet ground

I've raised sheep, but never faced this issue. The only corduroy I know of is a textured fabric, so I'm dying to know more about that and Google hasn't been much help. I think the timbers would work if they can hold the weight of the sheep.

    Get Diesel Out Of Clothes

I'll tell ya what I do. I stick the clothes in a large container and fill it with hot water and some degreaser. I let it set for about half an hour. Then I pour it out. Next I soak the clothes in some Listerine which helps to remove the smell. Then I wash it in the washing machine with some...

    Climate Change And Global Warming

In plain man's terms, global warming is how we define the gradual, yet continuous warming of the earth which is mostly caused by man. That gradual, yet relentless warming, is harming the animals, plants, microbes, fungi, people, and all other living things, because it causes climate change...
