    Off-farm breaks

I haven't taken off lately because of the pandemic, but I've taken off before for a few days here and there. None of my neighbors know anything about livestock, so I always have to hire help and sometimes it's a hassle.

    Rubber broom

I'll try that trick with a piece of rubber on a small area. In the past I've used a nitrile glove to pick up pet hair on my living room furniture. It works as well as those disposable rollers.

    Kids say the darndest things

During breakfast we were all talking about how the pandemic has saved us time - no commute, no team sports, no fundraisers. Well, my son chimed in with, "I save so much time since I don't need to brush my teeth." It turns out that online learning and wearing a mask when leaving the home means...

Covering graves - yea or nay?

Do you make a point to cover your loved ones' graves with flowers or other trinkets? I've noticed that it's important to some people, but not others and it usually just depends on what your family did while you were growing up. I'm in charge of covering the graves in my family. I usually...

    Brrr... winter soups

I love potato soup and I haven't had any in ages. My husband makes the tastiest potato soup and chili. I can make decent chili, but I tend to scorch the potatoes when I try making potato soup.

    Maintaining healthy soil

One of the best things that can help is just to plant something so the soil isn't bare. Bare dirt leads to erosion and the rain will quickly leach the soil.

    Homemade pizza... toppings

I prefer Pizza Hut pizza over the homemade stuff because I like their crust better. I usually just get a supreme pizza, but I'll add spinach to make it seem healthier. So how did your pizza turn out, @BIGRED?

    Potassium

My doctor recommended that I start taking a potassium supplement, but there are so many varieties that I have no idea which to order. Is it actually beneficial to take potassium that came from "multiple sources" or is that just a marketing claim to move product? Any idea?

    Skunked

A skunk sprayed my poor cat a month or so ago. I tried bathing him with tomato juice, because I've heard that same tip that you guys have, but it didn't help at all. The emergency vet told us to wash him with blue Dawn dish soap a few times. It helped some, but the real truth is that it just...

    The Chicago Mercantile Weather Derivatives

How wild! I had no idea. I can't say that I'll join in. I'm fairly risk averse. Though I still kick myself for not investing in Bitcoin when it was super cheap.

How many fish in a 1-acre pond?

A one acre pond is huge. A person can do a lot with that. I think it's important to start with what your family will eat and what they won't. It does no good to stock a pond with trout if trout never make it to the dinner table.

    HVAC sounds like a helicopter

My HVAC system sounds like a helicopter that is flying overhead. I know that probably sounds wacky, but I don't know how else to describe it. What do you think could be wrong with it? We just had it installed a year ago.

    Backyard livestock

I'm an urban homesteader. I started with chickens and I think that was a good choice for me. I think the biggest issue with larger barn animals is dealing with their manure, especially if you have neighbors.

    I'm bored!

@Demeter I'm married with children. I shouldn't be bored, but I can't help it. I definitely sound like a whiny toddler. I ordered a dartboard off Amazon. I'm looking forward to learning how to play darts. Thanks! I'm glad I made this thread because you guys have great ideas for...

    Best Christmas gift this year

Wow, it sounds like you both got very thoughtful gifts, @BIGRED and @Shelbii. That is super sweet. My favorite gift this year was a bracelet that my youngest son got me. My husband said he saved his allowance for a long time to buy it. I honestly wish my kiddo had used the money for...

    Would You Join a Union?

I'm 100% pro-union all the way. My husband is in the IBEW and they've been a tremendous help towards keeping the workers safe during the pandemic. If it was up to the bosses and owners, there would be no precautions taking to avoid COVID-19 exposure. The union put a stop to the recklessness.

    I'm bored!

Y'all, I don't mean to sound like a child, but gosh darn it am I bored. I've read some of what you all are up to, and I have to say that I don't want to read a book, I don't want to watch Netflix, and I don't want to play a game. I've done all those things multiple times since we started...

Any plans to ring in 2021?

I used to throw a nice party for all of my friends, but COVID-19 threw that out the window. I guess my husband and I will probably spend the night alone, like we've been doing since the pandemic hit. I love him dearly, and we have a lot in common, but I sure miss my friends.

    Largest crops in the world

I know I'm a huge sugar addict, so I send my thanks to Brazil for keeping me up in the stuff. I figured that cocoa and coffee would rank higher than corn, so that's an interesting tidbit to note. Thanks for sharing. I can't wait until it's safe to meet with friends again, so I can share my...

    What is fair game/off limits?

I don't have super expensive machinery like some of you guys do, but I'm pretty willing to share just about anything with the right person. I wouldn't loan so much as a DVD to some folks, but I'd loan the contents of my entire house to someone who has proven themselves trustworthy.
